I TOOK a few days off work and allowed myself to wallow in self-pity and sadness for two days. Then I decided to take Nateâs advice. It was time to start living again.
I started by making my apartment more than just a place to liveâI made it a home. Money wasnât a problem, as I made good money and had barely been spending any of it. I bought pictures for the walls and new furniture. I bought a new wardrobe and took a cooking class. The instructor of the cooking class asked me out, and I accepted. We went out a couple of times, but the chemistry wasnât right, so we didnât see each other again.
I tried speed dating, internet dating, and going to clubs. I had dates. I had sex. I even had a few short relationships.
Eight months after my night with Nate, I was at the Ten99 Club when I saw Gil. He was alone, but I didnât approach him. I was on the dance floor with a hot guy when Gil noticed me. He looked surprised to see me, or maybe he was just surprised that I was out living a life instead of dying without him.
I finally took a break from dancing to get a drink. When I heard someone sit down next to me, I knew without looking that it was Gil. I turned and smiled at him.
âHello, Gil,â I said.
âEdward,â he said in his usual arrogant and pretentious voice. I hated being called Edward, but he had always insisted on it. Like saying my full name made me less of a grease monkey. âHow are you?â
âIâm doing great,â I answered truthfully.
âLooks like it,â he said. What he didnât say, but I knew he wanted to, was that he didnât know how I could be doing so well without him.
âHowâs Larry?â I asked.
âYou mean Lawrence?â I shrugged nonchalantly. âLawrence and I are not⦠together.â
âSchool night?â I joked.
âLawrence and I broke up, Edward. He left me.â
âOh, Iâm sorry,â I said mockingly.
âI donât expect you to be sad about it, but I think it was for the best. I didnât realize until just now that I made a mistake when I left you.â
I looked at him like he had grown a second nose. âWhatâre you saying?â
âIâm saying that I want you back, Edward. I still love you, and I want us to try again. Give up that hovel youâre living in and come back to live with me.â
âLive with you? And go to back to the way things were?â
âYes, we can have parties like we used to. Do all the things we used to do together.â
âIâve made new friends. Can we invite them to the parties?â
âGrease monkey friends?â
I nodded.
âWell, I donât think theyâd mix well with our friends, but maybe we can do something else with them. Maybe we can invite them over when my Beemer breaks down.â
Lord, he was a pompous ass.
âIf I said yes and went home with you right now, what would we do?â
Gil leaned in and whispered in my ear.
