I TOOK a few days off work and allowed myself to wallow in self-pity and sadness for two days. Then I decided to take Nate’s advice. It was time to start living again.

I started by making my apartment more than just a place to live—I made it a home. Money wasn’t a problem, as I made good money and had barely been spending any of it. I bought pictures for the walls and new furniture. I bought a new wardrobe and took a cooking class. The instructor of the cooking class asked me out, and I accepted. We went out a couple of times, but the chemistry wasn’t right, so we didn’t see each other again.

I tried speed dating, internet dating, and going to clubs. I had dates. I had sex. I even had a few short relationships.

Eight months after my night with Nate, I was at the Ten99 Club when I saw Gil. He was alone, but I didn’t approach him. I was on the dance floor with a hot guy when Gil noticed me. He looked surprised to see me, or maybe he was just surprised that I was out living a life instead of dying without him.

I finally took a break from dancing to get a drink. When I heard someone sit down next to me, I knew without looking that it was Gil. I turned and smiled at him.

“Hello, Gil,” I said.

“Edward,” he said in his usual arrogant and pretentious voice. I hated being called Edward, but he had always insisted on it. Like saying my full name made me less of a grease monkey. “How are you?”

“I’m doing great,” I answered truthfully.

“Looks like it,” he said. What he didn’t say, but I knew he wanted to, was that he didn’t know how I could be doing so well without him.

“How’s Larry?” I asked.

“You mean Lawrence?” I shrugged nonchalantly. “Lawrence and I are not… together.”

“School night?” I joked.

“Lawrence and I broke up, Edward. He left me.”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” I said mockingly.

“I don’t expect you to be sad about it, but I think it was for the best. I didn’t realize until just now that I made a mistake when I left you.”

I looked at him like he had grown a second nose. “What’re you saying?”

“I’m saying that I want you back, Edward. I still love you, and I want us to try again. Give up that hovel you’re living in and come back to live with me.”

“Live with you? And go to back to the way things were?”

“Yes, we can have parties like we used to. Do all the things we used to do together.”

“I’ve made new friends. Can we invite them to the parties?”

“Grease monkey friends?”

I nodded.

“Well, I don’t think they’d mix well with our friends, but maybe we can do something else with them. Maybe we can invite them over when my Beemer breaks down.”

Lord, he was a pompous ass.

“If I said yes and went home with you right now, what would we do?”

Gil leaned in and whispered in my ear.
